Going for overnight recollection tonight
Published by Jun | Filed under AdDU, Education
Tonight i will be going for overnight recollection tonight with my co-major, Entrepreneurs 3rd year. This is part of the Catholic and Jesuit tradition of the Ateneo de Davao University which will be spearheaded by the AdDU Campus Ministry. It ask us to actively participate in the overnight recollection which is a time for recollection, prayer and spiritual growth.
I really don’t want to go since this is not part of my culture and tradition and it’s for catholic. I ask if i’ll be excuse but they said it’s required in the academic program or else i can’t graduate. Being enrolled in a catholic university, we muslims have no choice? or do we? but just attend even it’s against our will so just to finish and get a quality education. There’s one time i ask my FYCF Facilatator last year if i can be excuse or the option not to enroll the Theology subject and enroll outside for Islamic theology since i’m a muslim, her answer is – “this is a catholic university and if you don’t like it you can go enroll somewhere else”. Well, i just have to endure and finish 4 Theology subjects.
Christian Students (Catholics and Non-Catholics) must bring their bible. I ask the Retreat Facilitator that i don’t have a bible, she said i can bring Qur’an. Good thing that Muslims like me have the option nor encouraged to bring our Qur’an. Maybe I’ll just go and explore and enjoy my spirituality.
Heres the possible Retreat Houses:
- Dominican House of Prayer, Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City
- Kapwa Upliftment Foundation, Magtuod, Maa, Davao City
- La Storta Retreat House, Shrine Hills, Davao City
- Manresa by the Sea, Talomo, Davao City
- St. Charles Borromeo Retreat House, Matina Aplaya, Davao City
- Teresian Daughters of Mary, Matina, Davao City
- Saloma Sa Kinaiyahan, Sitio Sta. Martha, Catalunan Grande, Davao City
During my highschool years also enrolled in a catholic school supervised by La Salle Brothers/FSC – La Salle Academy, Iligan City. So much of catholic education i also have my retreat or recollections in my highschool education. Now in college another recollections and retreat. Hope this is the last retreat catholic retreat/recollections in my life.
So i will be out today (Dec.3) until tomorrow (Dec.4). I can’t be reach that time since our mobile phones required to be off.

Hi Jun – how did the retreat go? For me, I think that it is a good thing for Muslims to go for a Christian retreat, and also for Christians to go for a Muslim retreat too! Sort of a cultural exchange, where each group can learn about the beliefs of the other group. If more people did like what you are doing, maybe the island of Mindanao would be a better place for all of us!
I hope you found some value in the retreat!

@ Bob – Well its not that bad except when airplanes fly over our retreat house – its kinda load. Its a new experience and hoping to understand more about Christians.
@ Bariles – Thanks for the kind words. :)

Hi Onyot,
You remind me of my experience when I was in University of santo Tomas. Muslim students are not exempted too in Theology subjects. It seems a bit awkward at first but then, for me I didn’t see anything wrong with it as long as you should not forget, abandon and neglect your own religion. How could the popular MR.AHMED DEEDAT made huge debates with the Christian scholars if he had no knowledge in christian doctrines. Besides, I really cherish my non-muslim friends. I agree with Mindanao Bob, it’s nice to have some ideas with the beliefs of others.

@ Ate Pla – I don’t have a problem learning theology. Though during theology discussion i sometime digress my opinion that i believe more true, since i don’t want to have a fight and i don’t want to offend my class.
what i didn’t like is when I’m forced to be part of their collective prayer and do the way they pray even i pray for Allah in my heart. The only proper way to pray is the one teaches by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), other invention prayer by man is a deviation and it’s not permissible in Islam.
I also respect my non-muslim friends. Thanks for dropping by. :)
@ rhon – i’m alright. goodluck sa film exhibit. my number is in my about page.

Ok lang yan Jun. I guess you had fun naman sa retreat. Overnight lang naman yun. Besides, charge mo na lang sa learning and experiences mo yan. Dapat yung Catholics like me may exposures din sa mga traditions niyo. Para charge din to experience. hehe!

Then, that’s different story and bad enough…during our time in UST, my sister(Ate Tap) and I never been forced to attend in their collective prayers such as mass prayers or retreat. We took and finished all the Theology subjects but they allowed us to be exempted in those mentioned collective prayers. I’ve encountered frequently being called to lead and recite their “Our Father” prayer before we start our classes but Alhamdulillah they understand and accept my reason why I would decline to do so. Disagreement in between some aspects is inevitable but I prefer to keep quiet unless being asked to bring out my opinion as a muslim. I listen and respect their belief but nobody can ever change my islamic beliefs. Boy,I am shock to hear that you were forced to pray with them???that’s very sad…I wish they would respect your religious faith, because everybody has the right on their own creed. Be steadfast.

As I’ve said, my classmates and I couldn’t avoid to disagree to each other during discussion , I always keep in my heart the “Surah al-Kafirrun” esp. the last verse-”lakom dinokom waliyadin”(To you be your belief and to me my belief(in Islam).” I’m glad I never had any sarcastic comments from them nor they heard hard words also from me and we end up as a friends till my last day in our university. I think the key word is RESPECT.
