Lost Files, Disaster and Always Do Backup

This past days i was fixing both my Desktop PC and Laptop. I reformat, repartition and reinstall MS Windows XP SP2 and other application i always use needed for Web Development and everyday use. The desktop is smoothly fixed as i updated all latest patches of WinXP SP2. But when after fixing the laptop - it’s a DISASTER!

Both my Desktop and Laptop has multi-boot or dualboot OS’es. My desktop is multi-boot with different OS’es - GNU/Linux Slackware 12, Apple Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.10 and Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. Laptop is dual-boot with Apple Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.10 and MS Windows Home.

I recently decided to removed or uninstall the hacked Mac OSX86 because it’s not stable on my hardware like Skype for Mac always crash and other applications. What do you expect? its hacked and a trying hard PC running an Apple Mac OSx. At least i have now a feel to have a Mac! *evil grin* added to my wishlist to buy next year. So when removing this Mac OSX for PC i also need to restructure the partition table of my hard drive - deleting and recreating fresh partitions.

I have no problem with repartitioning in my PC but its a DISASTER when i reinstall the winxp home in laptop - i use restore DVD backup or the recover disc. Before restoring i delete the macosx partition - no problem with that as i also merge this fresh partition to a new drive which will be the drive c: for Windows. I only did backup is some files in old drive c:\ but in the drive d:\ with 50GB+ data archived is not. I didn’t do backup as i expect i will only reinstall on drive C and not in D. But the unexpected disaster slap in my face! During installation it reformat the drive d and lost all my priceless files of more than 50GB datas. I should have backup it before. I really regret it.

Now all my files are gone i’m wandering what important files i lost? Heres some of the list:

• Priceless Photo Collection of me and my family and of course pictures of my friends.
• Word Documents - confidential letters, projects, research and reading materials for this past year.
• Anime Collection - i lost all the latest episodes of my favorite animes:
  • Naruto Shippuuden
  • Bleach
  • Genshiken 2
  • One Piece
• Indies Film - i have some copies of my filmmaker friends.
• Website backups - i always do backups of my websites. Now i lost everything.
• Website Templates - it’s now all gone from PSD/PNG templates to Wordpress and Joomla commercial templates. This templates cost me $$$.
• Web Dev Installers
• EBooks - from SEO, Programming to Cooking.

This only the thing i can recall in my mind that i lost in my drive d, but sure theres more stuff i lost. Last night i feel like i want to kill myself nor commit suicide. Honestly i was really down. My mind is floating and mourning for the lost files. Until now i wake up - i still cant believe my stupidity of not backing up cost my priceless data.

I have to re-download the animes and some templates and rebackup my websites but this process will take me days nor eat all my times. I have 27units academic units enrolled and squezzing to do this routine is a headache.

I really need a new PC to service as a Linux File Server, prolly a 2TB (4×500GB) harddisk will do. I need this to centralized all my backups when i tried to reformat my PC and Laptop. Now i need to save more money and also work hard to make money online. I want a new PC by the end of this year.

A hard lesson learned - ALWAYS DO BACKUP!
